Biography

Robert S. McNamara was born in Oakland, California, on 9 June 1916, to Robert James McNamara and Clara Nell McNamara.  He was educated in public schools before receiving a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1939.  After a year with Price Waterhouse & Co., McNamara returned to teach at Harvard from 1940-43, from where he also instructed Army Air Corps officers in statistical techniques and war management.

McNamara remains the longest-serving US Secretary of Defense (1961-68), under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
